Why I Believe Every Child Can Learn to Read

As a reading teacher and a parent, I’ve seen firsthand the frustration, tears, and self-doubt that can come when a child struggles to read. I’ve also seen the incredible joy and pride that comes when that same child finally cracks the code. That is why I believe, deeply, that every child can learn to read.

It may not happen on the same timeline. It may not look the same for every child. But with the right instruction, the right support, and a belief that they can succeed, I believe reading is possible for all.

Reading Is a Skill, Not a Talent

Sometimes we treat reading like it’s a natural gift. Either you have it or you don’t. But that’s not true. Reading is a learned skill. It’s not something we’re born knowing how to do. The human brain is wired for language, but it has to be taught to read.

Just like learning to ride a bike or play the piano, reading takes practice, good instruction, and time. Some children need more direct, step-by-step teaching to build this skill. That is okay.

Science Backs This Up

Research shows that almost all children, around 95%, can become skilled readers if they are taught using methods based on the science of reading. This includes explicit instruction in:

  • Phonemic awareness (hearing sounds in words)
  • Phonics (matching letters to sounds)
  • Decoding (sounding out words)
  • Fluency and comprehension

Some kids pick this up quickly. Others need more repetition, more time, and more careful teaching. But the ability is there.

The Key Is Giving Kids What They Need

When a child struggles to read, it is not because they can’t. It is usually because they haven’t been taught in a way that makes sense to their brain yet. It is our job as teachers and parents to keep trying, to keep adjusting, and to keep believing.

Sometimes this means small group instruction, structured reading programs, or one-on-one support. Sometimes it means extra practice at home. It always means patience.

I’ve Seen It Happen

I’ve worked with kids who were years behind in reading. I’ve taught children who were told they would never catch up. I’ve seen students who were labeled as struggling readers become confident, capable ones.

I’ve also walked this road as a mom. My own daughter faced reading challenges when she was young. Today, she is a college graduate who loves to learn. She didn’t need a different brain. She needed a different approach.

Final Thoughts

I believe every child can learn to read. Not because it is easy. Not because it always happens quickly. But because when we give kids the right tools, we unlock their potential.

When we believe in them, they start to believe in themselves.

Let’s keep showing up, keep supporting, and keep learning because every child is worth it.
